The animals are going after her. Yes, they’re attacking those around her, but three times it was her involved. Deer, Prada, Birds. All Lydia. Lydia is the link between the three weird animal incidents.

This is the Lydia we’re introduced to, who hounds Scott into playing the lacrosse game [which he was trying to get out of because werewolf] because Jackson was hurt. This is the Lydia who tells Jackson to take cortisone shots because “the pros do it”. Who has perfect hair, and clothes, and make-up, and perfect grades, and won’t let anyone associated with her be any less than perfect either. The Lydia we meet is mean and intimidating.

This is the Lydia who scoops up Allison, who sits down at a lunch table with Scott & Stiles [who gets scornful looks from Danny & an unnamed girl] and a whole flock of people joins her.

Meeting her parents shows us a fair amount of where she got the obsession with perfection from. She’s not really any more subtle than Jackson is about the whole thing, it’s just that her pursuits don’t currently include a school sport [she is, however, an excellent ice-skater].

In S2, when she came back to school and thanks to the search parties, everyone knew she’d run through the woods naked for two days, everyone near the door stopped in their tracks and stared at her. EVERYONE. It was incredibly rude of them.

She was shaking in the hall and crying in the bathroom, she was writing backwards on the chalkboard and tearing up in front of an entire class and a teacher, and no one helped her.

Her parents send her to the school guidance counselor Ms. Morrell, and that’s it, as far as we know.

Lydia didn’t send out invitations to her birthday party, but the dialogue between Stiles/Scott/Allison implies that even if she had, no one would have showed. It takes Scott & Stiles contacts to make the party happen.

Considering what Allison overheard people saying about her thanks to Kate at the start of S2, Lydia’s probably been hearing similar things. No one’s flocking to her table anymore.

Our main characters didn’t help either; she tried talking to Jackson, and he blew her off with “we’re not getting back together” instead of letting her get to her point, Stiles asked what we wrong but then never came back to actually listen [fucking werewolves, fucking Kanima], and when she tried reaching out to Allison, Allison cut her off and dismissed her.

Season two, for Lydia, was pretty much a great big confirmation of what she’d said all along.

Hemlock Grove’s flaws might not have stood out so much had I not just watched NBC’s Hannibal. True, that show starts off with a bland procedural set-up: A serial killer is killing young women because he’s got a thing for his daughter, then he tries to kill his daughter, but the heroes save her. Any other show would consider the story done, and move on to next week’s monster.

But then the daughter comes back in the second episode. And the third. She just keeps showing up; making us wonder what she feels, who she is, what she’s capable of. How she came to be on the other end of that knife. She’s unsettlingly permanent, this almost-dead girl, a reminder that all those other dead girls existed and can’t be erased by hitting the reset button at the beginning of each episode. By the third episode, she’s one of the most complex and unreadable characters on a show that stars Hannibal effing Lecter. She’s human; she’s a mystery; we don’t know how deep she goes or whether we’ll like what we find at the bottom. Like any actual teenage girl, she refuses to stay within the bounds of her symbolic meaning. If it weren’t for the fact that she’s still breathing, she’d look almost exactly like Laura Palmer.
